Salou adds Porroig machine gun nests to its historical trail

Salou. Costa Dorada. 18 April 2026. Salou has expanded its cultural heritage with a fourth historical route, focusing on the Porroig machine gun nests. These well-preserved bunkers showcase Cap Salou’s historical strategic value and now serve as a site for peace and reflection.

Mayor Pere Granados noted that the site is designed for the public, particularly young people, to learn about the region's past—including the era of relentless pirate raids that began in the 14th century.

The restoration of Porroig machine gun nests was made possible through funding from the Diputació de Tarragona and collaboration with the Spanish Army, which will provide period-specific machine guns to make the exhibit more immersive for visitors.

This new site joins Kallipolis, the Barenys Roman villa, and the Modernism Route, cementing Salou’s status as a leading destination for history and culture.
